Four years late, here is the final list.  One thing I’ve noticed as I put this together is that there is a great lack of compilations on this list.  A lot of the decent compilations in the nineties have great songs, but also terrible ones.  I still feel like I am missing something obvious…

I remember when this record came out the hype on it was gigantic. These guys were supposed to be the next super huge emo band. When I got my hands on it I was pretty impressed. It takes a lot, especially back then, for me to dig a band like this but I really like this record. Three bursts of emo energy ala Sunny Day Real Estate and stuff like that. This record is the perfect length: any longer and it would probably get on my nerves. These guys spawned a million crappy wannabe bands, but whatever.

This is still in print from Revelation Records. They also did an LP and a few split seven inches. None of them have impressed me all that much however.

I hesitated to buy this for a long time when I was a teenager. I had heard it was members of Chain of Strength but a lot melodic and emo sounding. I wondered if this was another record that may have “shaken a few nails loose” if you know what I mean. Finally, I bit the bullet and picked the record up. I couldn’t be more pleasantly surprised. Statue manage to sound like they came from DC circa 1987 but with enough hardcore still in them to please the youth crew crowd. This is way better than Chain of Strength that is for sure!

I remember the band Parting Shot covering Fueling once here in New Jersey. John and I were so surprised we totally flipped out. Someone once told me there is a video of that out there.

This is still available via Revelation Records. There is a CD of their demo when they were called Something To Say, but that is out of print as far as I know (??).

A classic record from this stoner rock band. Any band that can combine stoner jams, Glen E. Friedman photos, and an SSD cover is ok by me. I don’t really have much else to say other than that this is perfect driving and skating music. These guys are great live too. Fu Manchu are a great example of a truly “hardcore” band whose roots are solidly in hardcore but have branched off into other stuff that is just as great.
