Signifying Nothing Top 100 Of The Nineties

Four years late, here is the final list.  One thing I’ve noticed as I put this together is that there is a great lack of compilations on this list.  A lot of the decent compilations in the nineties have great songs, but also terrible ones.  I still feel like I am missing something obvious…

Top 100 Of The Nineties: Breakdown-Blacklisted

This record has always been a favorite in Manahawkin. It’s hard for me to describe it without using a lot of cliches about how “hard” it is. Blacklisted & Street Fight are ridiculous. By the time the mosh part hits in Blacklisted you’re probably already worn out. Street Fight is so heavy and often had the dance floor going crazy. Even random townie hardcore kids from Manahawkin loved these songs and would dance especially hard for them.

What It Is & Don’t Give Up are older songs from the New Breed comp. The versions on here are a lot “slicker” but I do like them. Jail of Depression is great and very new school sounding, almost parroting Mike Dijan’s other band at the time Crown of Thornz.

Side B of the vinyl version has some great live versions of the songs from the classic 87 demo. There is some hilarious between song banter as well. This is a classic record by an incredible band who never seemed to get their proper due. Whenever they played New Jersey the only people who seemed to be psyched on them were kids from Manahawkin and a select group of people who have a clue. Everyone else loses out.

Newz U Can Uze

  • Aversion Online recently posted about one of my favorite bands from the mid 90’s, Crown of Thornz. These guys were great live, really heavy and got insane reactions from the crowd. Train Yard Blues is a great record. For awhile once we started getting our driver’s licenses we would go see these guys because we knew they covered The Hardway by Outburst. We only saw them do it once or twice but we always checked them out when they played New Jersey.
  • The new issue of Stop, Look, & Listen Fanzine is out now. Check out their website for more information.
  • We Jam Econo is going to be screened a lot of places in November and December. Hopefully I will be seeing it in Philadelphia in the middle of the month.
  • Total Liberation is a new blog about veganism and animal rights. They already have Cro-Mags lyrics up so you know it is a winner. I mean really, the fucking Cro-Mags were vegetarians! Why aren’t you?
  • Those involved in the hardcore scene during the mid 90′s will remember Belief Fanzine. Chad is now online. I hope he gets some cool stuff up soon.
