Citizens Arrest are one of the most essential bands of the late 80′s to early 90′s period when hardcore was taking a turn towards uglier, noisier, and harsher sounds. Contemporary to bands like Rorschach, Burn, and No Comment, Citizens Arrest’s sound is equal parts influenced by bands like Napalm Death and Siege, and more youth crew oriented bands like Youth of Today or Infest. This discography contains pretty much everything it could possibly contain in a very organized manner. Their lukewarm demo (includes vocals by Ted Leo, that guy emos and post hardcores love so much) begins things, followed by one track from their legendary WNYU session. Their essential seven inch follows, which really shows the influence of early DC bands like Void and Youth Brigade, but also Siege and Infest. A variety of compilation songs comes next. Finally, their monstrous LP Colossus, finishes the discography. Heavily influenced by both Infest and Napalm Death (and other early Earache bands), their LP is the band’s finest hour. Daryl’s vocals are ugly, getting close to death metal styled sounds. I always wanted bands to cover the Utopia intro as a teenager. An absolutely essential and very influential set of recordings. It looks like this might be out of print already?

(Nice Hardware Fanzine shirt on me)

This show was hyped up for awhile as I recall. Smash & Grab was the new band for three members of Floorpunch together with members of Shark Attack and American Nightmare. Yeah, we were pretty curious. Bane and No Warning also played along with a couple others. I think I headed to this show with Jay Fisher and maybe Jim Lundy and a few other friends of ours. Smash & Grab had shirts for sale before they played and I got a chance to catch up with a bunch of friends who I had not seen in awhile. Around this time period (early 2002) I think I kind of vanished from shows at different points.

I recall the band Embrace Today covering Guilty Of Being White. Uh huh. There was some drama at the time about them covering it at a show with some white power skins attending too I think. They also covered an Anthrax (not the excellent UK band, the shitty metal one) song or intro or something.

All of us packed up front for Smash & Grab’s set. I made a point of packing my micro recorder so that I could tape their set. This turn out to be smart as they never played another show.

Smash & Grab took the stage and busted into their intro. A few people moved around, I think I might dove and landed on my ass awkwardly, but most people just watched in anticipation. Their sound was a bit different from Floorpunch reminding me at times of Murphy’s Law, and Burn in one song. After a short set, and no covers strangely enough, they were done.

Some of these songs would end up on the Anger Regiment record on Bridge 9. There are interesting bits in some of the songs, but I don’t think I have listened to it since it came out.

In other news, Intro/Changes is the best Straight Edge song ever.

So here is a zip file of their set from that night. The vocals are pretty low, but you get the idea. I think it is a interesting piece of NJHC ephemera.

Another note: No Warning also played this show…at the time, I was working out a big tape trade with one of their band members (Matt Delong I think?) and it had hit a couple of snags. I was palling around with a friend of theirs in this time period, who I seem to have totally lost track of, so I talked to them about it and got everything settled. Man, I am so happy with the way things go today. People just send zip files back and forth and it is over.

I’m not really a fan, but I packed up front to check them out. No Warning get ready and bust into the Outburst intro. Yes! That got the place moving. They played a decent set, which ended with a Raw Deal cover…I think?  Like I said, I’m not really a fan but they sounded good and people totally went off.

We left before Bane played. I don’t think it was anything against them, but we checked out and headed back to the shore.

Three new ones that I believe are going to be on their next record. These continue in the same vein as their excellent LP Constant Struggle. The Icemen, early Metallica, and Burn are definite reference points here. I just hope the metal influences don’t overwhelm them. Members of this band were in Far From Breaking and Desperate Measures, but this is far from that sound.

This is a new band for members of Champion and Trial that does not deviate too far from those bands. Energetic, slightly metallic, hardcore with way too much chugga chug and scratchy New Age Records, circa 1994, style vocals. The stop and go parts remind me of, of all bands, Sparkmarker. If you like Trial or Champion you will like this probably. I will pass on this one. This is the kind of stuff I thought bands like Devoid Of Faith and Floorpunch pushed to the side when they came along.

The promo sheet that comes with this is hilarious: among the ridiculous statements made on it include a note about selling one thousand demos “in a market that usually supports 1/10^th of that.” How are they doing in the males 18-49 demograph? Do soccer moms 35-50 enjoy it? I love the proclamation that Wait In Vain are “a return of hardcore that feels dangerous and potentially lethal to the status quo.” Yeah, sure it is. I can just hear the status quo trembling in fear. Maybe you will poll better with the “tween” market.

My favorite though is the comparisons to Burn and the Cro-Mags. Uh, no, not even close. 10/10 bands that are said to sound like either of those bands don’t.

Last year’s sleeper hit on the Revelation compilation returns with a new LP filled with mid 90′s style hardcore. Like I said last year, these guys sound like a breath of fresh air right now. If you like stuff like Quicksand, Lincoln, Burn, Helmet, and bands like that you will love this. Bonus points for covering Electric Funeral live. I’ve been spinning this one a lot lately. Check this and the other great records on Collapse Records out. Members of this band were also recently in Get Real.

This is another record, much like the Burn record, which really blew my mind.

Beyond were pretty legendary to me before I even heard them. Remember this is the days before file sharing, eBay, and CDR’s. If you were lucky you had cool people in your town or pen pals who hooked you up with classic records and demos. Thankfully I had a bit from column A & B so I got a video of Beyond when I was 16. I was floored by this band who played lightning fast and kept yelling BEYOND! BEYOND! over and over. Around this time someone dubbed me their demo (there was also a bootleg of it shortly after this that got around a lot too.). I was pretty impressed by them and, already growing a little bored with 1-2 youth crew style hardcore, their more technical songs really impressed me.

Later that year, on the way to a show, a friend put a tape in the car stereo. The feedback broke into this super heavy intro with a really cool bass break. I asked him who this was?! He told me to keep listening. Finally the vocals came in and immediately I knew who it was! He’d scored a copy of the Beyond LP! For us this was like finding an Antidote EP for $3. We must’ve listened to the album four or five times during the drive. On the way home we stopped at my house so i could dub a copy, which I still have somewhere in my closet probably to this day.

This record is pretty special to me. It reminds me of a time when I was beginning to be bored with the same old, same old, hardcore. This record, along with a few others, all came into my life at the same time and really changed things for me.

No Longer At Ease was reissued about five years by Some Records. I think it is out of print now, but I have heard there is a reissue coming shortly to coincide with Beyond getting together to play a couple shows.
